Deck calculator: metres per m² and cost

How many metres of decking do I need per m²?

For 145 mm boards, 5 mm gaps and a 4 × 3 m deck, the example buys 84 metres without waste allowance: 7 m/m². With 10% waste it buys 96 metres, or 8 m/m². The result divides purchased board length by area, including whole stock lengths and waste. It is not a universal coverage rate. The example uses 4 m stock boards laid along the 4 m side.

Analysis & guidance
  • How many metres of decking do I need per m²?

For 145 mm boards, 5 mm gaps and a 4 × 3 m deck, the example buys 84 metres without waste allowance: 7 m/m². With 10% waste it buys 96 metres, or 8 m/m². The result divides purchased board length by area, including whole stock lengths and waste. It is not a universal coverage rate. The example uses 4 m stock boards laid along the 4 m side.

  • What do materials for a 12 m² deck cost?

4 × 3 m, 145 mm boards, 5 mm gaps and 4 m stock lengths give 21 board rows. With 0% waste and 0.5 m joist spacing: 21 boards, 27 m of joists and 378 screws. At 100 SEK/board, 20 SEK/m and 1 SEK/screw, materials cost 3,018 SEK. Purchased metres per m² include cutting leftovers. Changing stock length to 3 m needs 42 boards of 3 m: 126 metres or 10.5 m/m² without waste allowance. The model does not reuse offcuts between rows.

  • What is excluded from the deck estimate?

No cutting optimisation or reuse between rows. Each board segment has its own end supports: two joists at each aligned butt joint. Rim joists, beams, fittings and foundations are excluded. Spacing and sizes are assumptions, not structural advice.

How are boards, joists and screws calculated?

Board rows round up from width and gaps. Each row buys separate whole stock lengths, then waste is added. Joists include both end supports and screws use two per crossing.

What do materials for a 12 m² deck cost?

What is excluded from the deck estimate?
