Building and gardening: materials and budget
Plan renovations and garden projects from measured dimensions to whole packs and your own budget. Choose the task, then check product details before ordering.
How does material need differ from purchase quantity?
Net need is the area, length or volume to cover. Waste and whole packs increase what you buy. A 20 m² floor with an assumed 10 percent waste needs 22 m². Packs of 3 m² mean eight packs and 24 m² purchased. The difference is not necessarily usable spare material. Choose waste for the project and installation method; Tarkett discusses flooring installation waste.
How do I get a useful cost estimate?
Enter your own price per pack, can, bag, plant or stock length in the stated unit. Calculator prices are inputs, not quotations or current market prices. A zero price means that cost is missing. Add labour and delivery separately and check whether quotes include preparation, disposal and accessories. Avoid charging the same delivery twice when combining tasks.
Should I calculate one task or a whole room?
Use a dedicated calculator for decking, fencing, hedges, paving, flooring, paint, wallpaper, trim, tiles, drywall or concrete when you need its product dimensions. Room renovation combines selected finishes using common room dimensions and shows subtotals. Do not add a standalone material estimate again for the same work in the room budget. Use separate calculations for different rooms or products.
What needs checking outside the calculator?
Results estimate quantities and costs. They do not determine structural capacity, foundations, moisture safety or a suitable planting site. Trim quantities are not an optimized cutting plan, and wallpaper does not cover every pattern match. Check the chosen product’s measurements and installation instructions. Obtain paint coverage and treatment from its product sheet, such as Beckers; do not use another product’s figures as a universal default.
