Skirting calculator: lengths, waste and cost
How much trim do I need?
Start with room perimeter, subtract doorway widths, add waste and round up to whole stock lengths. A 5 by 4 metre room with 2 metres of doorways needs 16 metres of skirting before waste.
Room perimeter is twice the sum of length and width. Subtract total doorway width, add waste and divide by the stock length you buy. Round up to whole pieces. Material cost uses those whole pieces.
Worked example
- Room length: 5 m
- Room width: 4 m
- Total doorway width: 2 m
- Stock trim length: 2.4 m
- Waste allowance: 10 %
- Price per trim piece: 50 SEK
- Labour cost: 200 SEK
- Delivery: 100 SEK
Trim length after doorways: 16 m; Trim length with waste: 17.6 m; Whole trim pieces: 8; Purchased trim length: 19.2 m; Material cost: 400 SEK; Total cost: 700 SEK.
Enter your own prices in SEK; example prices are not market prices. Labour and delivery are added separately. No tax relief is deducted.
Will the trim quantity be enough after cutting?
Not necessarily. Two 2.4-metre pieces cover only 4.8 metres of a 5-metre wall. An additional piece is needed, and reuse of the remainder depends on other walls and permitted joints. The calculator totals linear metres and rounds stock lengths; check each wall in a separate cutting plan.
Assumptions and limitations
This is an approximate linear method, not a cutting plan. Joints, corners, saw kerf and offcut reuse are not optimized. Check every wall length against the purchased stock before ordering; the calculated quantity can be insufficient despite waste allowance.

Replacing the floor too? Calculate flooring packs and waste, then combine tasks in room renovation. Do not add the same skirting cost twice.
