Flooring calculator: packs, waste and cost
How many flooring packs do I need?
Divide floor area including waste by the area per pack and round up. A 20 m² floor with 10 percent waste and 3 m² packs needs eight packs, or 24 m² purchased.
Floor area is length times width. Add waste and round up to whole packs. Underlay is priced per m² with the same waste; skirting uses perimeter minus doorway widths. The comparison uses the other floor’s own pack area and price with the same accessories, labour and delivery. Positive savings mean the alternative is cheaper.
Worked example
Underlay, skirting and comparison are off.
- Room length: 5 m
- Room width: 4 m
- Waste allowance: 10 %
- Area per flooring pack: 3 m²
- Price per flooring pack: 300 SEK
- Labour cost: 1000 SEK
- Delivery: 100 SEK
Floor area: 20 m²; Floor area with waste: 22 m²; Whole flooring packs: 8; Purchased floor area: 24 m²; Material cost: 2400 SEK; Total cost: 3500 SEK.
Enter your own prices in SEK; example prices are not market prices. Labour and delivery are added separately. No tax relief is deducted.
How do waste and pack size affect flooring cost?
For the same 22 m² requirement, 3 m² packs at 300 SEK need eight packs and cost 2,400 SEK. An alternative with 4 m² packs at 350 SEK needs six packs and costs 2,100 SEK. The difference is 300 SEK before shared accessories, labour and delivery. Enter both pack sizes when comparing; a price per m² alone does not reveal whole-pack cost.
Assumptions and limitations
The model uses a rectangular room. Waste is your assumption, not a guarantee. Underlay is sold per m² here; check roll rounding yourself. Skirting uses an approximate linear method without a cutting plan. Check the product’s installation instructions.
